Synthetic rattan furniture is an incredibly popular choice these days and it is easy to understand why. It not only works well in contemporary and traditional outdoor settings, but it is easy to take care of and if you buy good quality, will be very durable - even in Malaysia's harsh tropical climate.

How long do you expect your outdoor furniture to last? We have asked many of our customers the same question and in most cases they expect it to last 5 years or beyond.  We agree that good quality outdoor furniture should be able to last 5 years and much longer.....but quite often we hear customers having bought purely based on price and then been disappointed when the rattan starts to snap and crack after a years exposure to sunlight.  Its a false economy!  Cheap furniture creates cheap impressions, a lot of maintenance headaches  and even potential client injuries due to weak construction.

Synthetic rattan is made in many different parts of the world and to various standards of quality.  For our premium range which is designed and manufactured  by OHMM®, Raucord synthetic rattan from Rehau® is used.  Simply put,  Rehau® make the best synthetic rattan in the market today.   They are one of the pioneers of polymer manufacturing having been in the industry since 1948 and their rattan is UV-resistant, temperature resistant and incredibly strong & durable.

Other cheaper alternatives may be advertised as UV- resistant, but be careful. Some factories will cut costs by manufacturing the synthetic rattan in-house and it might not be sufficiently treated to ensure that it is 100% UV-stabilised.   

Another area that should be carefully considered is the frame of the furniture. Has it been made from aluminium, steel or wrought iron?  Aluminium is lightweight and rust-resistant so is a good choice for furniture that will be 100% exposed to the elements.  The OHMM® furniture range, uses extruded virgin aluminium with a 1.6 or 2.2mm gauge with strongly welded joints to ensure maximum strength.  All frames are fully electrostatically powder coated to avoid any oxidation and in a colour similar to that of the fibre.  Wrought iron and steel, on the other hand are heavier, but susceptible to rusting, even after powder coating and not ideal for the Malaysian climate, unless in an area which is protected from the rain, like on a covered balcony, terrace or porch.
